The road to the port of Stone Town will take a little over an hour. This is a fairly large and historical part of the capital. At 9-20 on the pier, tourists take their places on boats, which, with the speed of the wind, will drive to Prison Island. On the maps, this small island is marked under the name Changuu Private Island Paradise (Chang Paradise), and Prison is a prison building located on it. For a better perception, the name was shortened - now it is Prison Island or Prison Island. You can get around it in half an hour at a slow pace, but he has prepared two surprises for you!

The history of this piece of land begins in 1860. It was in this ill-fated year that the foot of a man officially set foot on it, who organized the trade in a living commodity - slaves. Due to its convenient location, next to the largest port of Zanzibar, men and women from all over East Africa were transported to the island. And after the purchase, they were transported throughout the Eastern Hemisphere.

At the end of the 19th century, the island was bought by a general from Britain. His name is not known for certain, but presumably it sounded like General Matthews. He built on it a place of detention for dangerous criminals. And then historians differ in their opinions. Who says that the prison was not used to keep villains, while others claim that the most dangerous members of the underworld were secretly taken to it, and terrible experiments were performed on them in dark basements. During the African epidemic of bubonic plague, cholera and yellow fever, the prison building was used as a medical facility and a quarantine zone for sick residents. Later it was closed.

Now this building has been converted into a beautiful hotel, but with an accompanying flavor. The cellars of this building are still closed to tourists. Nearby is a cozy cafe where you can drink a soft drink, refresh yourself and just relax. And a beautiful pool with the purest water and a beach strewn with starfish will not let you get bored.

In addition to the historic hotel building, the island is home to a huge colony of Seychelles turtles. This small piece of land is practically the last habitat of this species. They are under constant control by the owners of the island and the species is carefully guarded. Every year, the age of each individual is updated on the shell with paint. The oldest inhabitant of this place is almost 200 years old, this is almost the maximum age of life for these lovely creatures.

In 1919, 4 turtles were sent to the port city of Zanzibar. It was a gift from the ruler of the Seychelles. The population grew slowly. But for a long time they caught because of the excellent meat and hard shell. In 1997, only seven of these beautiful creatures remained! For hunters, this is an easy prey; turtles are not able to protect themselves from smart and strong people. Now the capture of slow and slow inhabitants of the Prison Island is prohibited.

In their usual habitat, turtles willingly allow themselves to be stroked and gladly accept grass from the hands of tourists, which is given to each visitor at the entrance to the protected area. And the photos in an embrace with them are simply magnificent!

Disappearing Island is a half hour boat ride from Prison. The group will be there at 11:30. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it appears only at low tide, in the morning. And in the evening it is not recommended to be on it, because there will be no island!
